In a Vase on Monday – Light My Fire

I must have been inspired by Cathy’s “Hunk of Burning Love” vase a couple of weeks ago when the title popped into my brain. I admit to loving The Doors and their iconic song “Light My Fire” from (gasp) 1967. This song has been haunting my consciousness for decades. I guess it’s the organ solo. My garden seems to be reflecting the mood, producing fiery flowers as summer winds down.

Some close ups, sans Jim Morrison.

I have been enjoying cutting Heliconias (Heliconia psittacorum) this summer in all their flaming glory; two varieties here – ‘Lady Di’ in red and yellow and ‘Choconiana’ in orange. The big leaf in the background is a Split Leaf Philodendron (Philodendron selloum).

Orange tubular flowers are, appropriately, Firebush (Hamelia patens var patens); red flowers with blue tips are Aechmea miniata bromeliads. The blue vase was a gift I have enjoyed tremendously over the years.

That’s all this Monday morning from scorching South Florida. Follow this link RamblingintheGarden to visit Cathy and peruse vases via comment links.

  1. You did find fiery colors to fill the vase. Organs have really fell out of favor in rock music.

Shame about the lack of Jim Morrison … your title got me all worked up. But that amazingly vibrant vase didn’t disappoint!

Your title couldn’t be more perfect for that arrangement, Amelia. The Heliconias are spectacular. Sorry about the scorching heat. We’ve edged just above 90F (again) but also had a jolt from a 4.7 earthquake…

This is so beautiful. And some plants I have never seen. The red flowers of the bromeliads– I am in love.

Heliconia psittacorum is growing well here, at least vegetatively. The foliage has grown ‘somewhat’ tall. I am pleased with the foliage alone, but would be even more pleased if it blooms next year. It is just simple yellow. I do not know the cultivar. I just learned that ‘Fire and Ice’ is another species, but am pleased with it also.

  8. You definitely lit the fire. Splendid, exotic (to me) flowers and the vase is a wonderful contrast and sets them off beautifully.

That is utterly glorious, Amelia! It’s not enough to gave all thes amazing blooms, because you have to be able to put them together – and you invariably do this in such a stylish way! I love it – and don’t mind the proverbial earworm either…but it does me wonder where all those years have gone….

I love, love your reds (and The Doors).
What a novelty to have those blue tips on the Aechmea miniata bromeliads. It’s been a scorching summer here too. Hope you get relief from the temperatures soon. The tropical storm was a temporary break for us, replaced by lots of rain.

And now I have that song going through my head too, and it just reminds me of summer days years ago, out of school with the radio on. 💕 Love your tropical fiery blooms Amelia and they do seem so appropriate for these hot days. (We are ordering a mini air con unit today to see if it helps at all!)😉
