In a Vase on Monday – Finally, A Front.

At long last a cold front arrived in Florida. It’s not very cold 70F/21C, but a welcome relief from much higher temperatures and humidity. I spent Sunday morning on demolition – abundant rainfall in a hot summer in South Florida produces some impressive weeds. I noted some nice autumnal colors in bloom and proceeded to plonk a celebratory vase.

The vase is a mason jar topped with a striped leaf from ‘Martin’ Neoregelia Bromeliad. Here’s a closer view of the rest of the vase.

The orange flowers are Firebush (Hamelia patens). Yellow bell shaped flowers are from the sometimes called Yellow Bells or Esperanza (Tecoma stans). The smaller yellow flowers are from Thyrallis (Galphimia glauca). Creamy white spikes are Juba Bush (Iresine diffusa) Flowing pink flowers are Muhly Grass (Muhlenbergia capillaris). These are some of my favorite flowers, all indestructible and evocative of fall in my garden.

That’s all from here! I’m looking forward to more weed demolition this week. Please visit Cathy at RamblingintheGarden to see more vases.

Beautiful arrangement. The only name I recognized was the Muhly grass. Florida flowers are quite different from the ones in West Virgina.

Pretty and cheerful combo, the yellow stars (Thyrallis) remind me of Lysimachia punctata that grows in my garden. Glad the weather has dialed back for you, enjoy the demolitioning! 😀

That’s a very attractive combination, Amelia! I really should try Hamelia and Tecoma in my own garden.

I love how the Muhly grass and Juby spikes and green foliage subtly turn the brightness and heat of the yellows and oranges into something cooler but still bright, just like your cold front…very clever, Amelia!

  7. Your vase has perfect fall colors. Using that stripped leaf was a really cool idea. I was wondering how cold your cold front was. Our front dropped the temperature down to the high 30″s with frost this morning.

You have really captured the essence of autumn here with that golden yellow. That is the exact colour of our leaves right now! The foliage is really pretty and so lush too. And the Juba bush adds a cool touch. 21°C sounds like the perfect weather for gardening Amelia. Enjoy being outdoors!

  9. 70 does seem cool for you folks, especially when we’ve recently had similar highs up here in the north. I know it won’t last long, but the weather sure is perfect right now. Your Firebush/Yellow Bells combination is stunning!

It has turned cooler here too with rain. Mind you, I don’t call 70s cool. I love your arrangement with its gorgeous autumn colours. I wish I could grow Hamelia patens.

Who says we don’t have fall colors. I’m very happy with the weather…I think our hot weather and humidity are gone for the rest of the year.
