It’s Mother’s Day in the US this Sunday. As I collect flowers, my thoughts are always with my mother, the Greatest Generation Southern Belle, Miss Betty, who would have adored In a Vase on Monday. I am certain if she was still with us (she would be 98 years old) I would be printing out blog posts and mailing them to her. Computers were not happening in her world, ever.
My father’s mother, Blanche (yes) was the Blue Willow collector. I suspect there is a gene as I love the pattern and china. The teapot was found on a shopping mission with my mother.
The Sunday Madness? A Food and Travel magazine contacted me a couple of months ago – soon after the historic freeze, and they wanted to photograph food in my garden. I agreed. And am madly putting things right. This week I am baking! I will share more as things progress.
A closer view. The white flowers spilling down the side are Sweet Begonia (Begonia odorata). Orange flowers are Mexican Honeysuckle (Justicia spicigera). Blue flowers are Plumbago (P. auriculata). White spikes are White Flame Salvia. Scent is added by chartreuse culinary dill flowers.
Foliage is ‘Mammey’ Crotons and Asian Sword Ferns.

Congratulations on the magazine article. I hope I can pick it up, so let us know when it comes out. That is how I found out about blogging from a Southern Living issue. The blogger lived in the Austin area and has since moved to a desert state. I could not get family and friends interested in my plant photos and have since found a community that loves plants as much as I do. I hope you will inspire gardeners to start a blog.

I’m not sure where you could get a hold of a copy. Homecooked magazine. Blogging is definitely a wonderful community for gardening. It seems a bit more Instagram oriented.

My first dishes in college were ‘Red WIllow’. It is a rare pattern nowadays. They were given to me by a neighbor who’s favorite color was red. Congratulations on the photo shoot. It is always fun to show of the garden.

How interesting about the photo shoot, Amelia – I look forward to hearing more. Have you got to provide all the props, edible or otherwise? I hope it all goes well.
How lovely to think that your mother would have enjoyed IAVOM. My mother (who is 100) was slightly computer literate for several years and used to get my posts by email, although in later years she printed them all off as she couldn’t read the text without enlarging it – and went through printer cartridges in no time at all! She doesn’t see my vases now, but still likes the idea of flowers
Any bloom would be enhanced by placing it in blue & white china, and your teapot fits so well with the Mothering Sunday theme. As always, the contents are the perfect mix of blooms and foliage

I am making my mango cupcake recipe for the photo shoot. It’s the magazine’s first vegan dessert and I haven’t heard anything from them since they tried the recipe. They were very excited about that, but who knows? How wonderful your Mum would use the computer. Mine thought the very concept of email was vile. Thank you, Cathy, I do enjoy making the Monday vases.

Everything about this arrangement is beautiful–from the flowers to the foliage to the vase, itself. I love the Mexican Honeysuckle with the Plumbago. And the trailing Sweet Begonias also add lovely personality. Miss Betty and Blanche sound like very special people. Good luck with the Food and Travel session! Do keep us posted!
