IAVOM Everything is Coming Up – Zinnias

People do grow roses in South Florida. I just don’t have the stomach for it, imagining the black spot and fungal diseases is sufficient, thank you, no. I need plants that will beat the heat and humidity. The Zin Master Zinnias are in fine form this summer. I am cutting a few every day and admiring how long they last in a Vase. About a week.

Given the broad range of colors in the zinnias; I decided a simple treatment was best. A grey vase found at a thrift store filled with a rubber band secured bouquet of zinnias and a few sprigs of my inexhaustible supply of the invasive Asian Sword Fern.

The stars:

The zinnias definitely like to be outside more than I do!

  1. Your zinnias have done really well this year. Do you save the seeds?

  2. Do the leaves get powdery mildew? Mine often do, come the humid days of August. This year, likely any day now. I love how this variety have such subdued colours.

I’m so envious of your Zinnias, Amelia! Mine, grown from seed, are still dinky seedlings. Our marine layer may have a down side – while it keeps the afternoon temperatures down, it limits the sun Zinnias need to thrive.

Oh, those are splendid. I may have already mentioned that both Brent and I, when were were little kids watching old cartoons, thought that zinnias were the flowers that Mickey Mouse picked at the porch of Minnie Mouse to present to her when she answered the door. (Popeye could have likewise picked really big zinnias for Olive Oyle, but we thought they looked more like daisies.)

Love your selection of zinnias, Amelia, and the ferns work so well with them. My zinnias are beginning to flower now so hopefully some will appear in a vase one of these weeks…
