My first zinnias of the summer appeared this week. Despite a seed packet promising mixed colors, they are all hot pepper spicy so far. There are a few more plants in bud, I am not holding my breath for pastels this summer. I decided to add some whites and blues to cool down the heat in the vase.

The Zingy Zinnias range in color from orange and fuchsia to deep red to orange. I seem to recall complaining about the insipid pink flowers from this same pack of seeds last summer! I’ll take Zingy over Insipid any day of the week. The blue flowers are Blue Plumbago (Plumbago auriculata) announcing summer is here. White flowers are Bidens alba, these have been gleefully reseeding everywhere so I should have a lot of cooling white on hand to counter the Zingies. Foliage is a small Dwarf Pygmy Date Palm (Phoenix roebellini) frond.
That’s all from soon to be sweltering South Florida!
Happy Gardening!

A nice taste of early summer! I am fond of the orange zinnia with fuchsia near the eye, they sometimes show up in my mixes, too. It works well with lots of colors in a bouquet.

I think the orange fuchsia and Envy are my favorites. Not sure that goes together?

Of course, they do. Art is personal expression! 🙂

Zinnias are too hot to be so cool anyway.

You also have some red, white and blue for the upcoming holiday.

Happy Memorial Day! Question – will Torenia make it in full sun, do you think? I have a nice pot of it going but the sun has moved.

Not so sure about the full Florida sun. Mine get at least part shade on the north side of the house.

Ooh, your first zinnias – how exciting! My seedlings are looking healthy, but I am avoiding planting them out yet – and I have gone for a mixed variety this year, so am also hoping for variety, and no insipid!! The plumbago works well with the bidens, which together tone down the spicy zinnias – another lovely Floridian vase!

I planted mine out over the weekend, fingers crossed they will do better this year! 🤞

Love the Zinnias, as always, and the Blue Plumbago and Bidens blooms are great companions in the vase. The spike of Date Palm foliage is perfect.

I would choose that colour zinnia over pastels Amelia. I don’t think I have seen any so vibrant before. The Plumbago is a surprisingly good companion to take off the heat. 😃

It seems that you can grow zinnias virtually year-round now, Amelia! I love that zingy color, which the blue plumbago emphasizes. It’s feeling like the start of summer here already too but my zinnia seedlings are only just beginning to emerge.

I need to concentrate more to get year round, but I think it is possible.
