In a Vase on Monday – New Summer Favorite

I am a fairly recent convert to Zinnia lover. It all started with a pack of Green Envy seed planted a few years ago to satisfy my desire for chartreuse cut flowers. I let the Envy go to seed and ended up with a new generation of greenish beige zinnias no one would envy so I bought some new seed. These are Zin Master Zinnias. They are living proof open pollinated seeds are what they are. These were advertised as a mixture of sizes, shapes and colors. The plants are prolific, all about three feet tall, and produce enough flowers that I cut a Vase every other day. The colors and flower size are the only things that are mixed.

My feelings are not mixed. These zinnias are my new summer favorites. For some reason, I have never grown zinnias in summer. I have them in containers – the ones that get the full brunt of South Florida summer sun are producing the most flowers. I am in awe and fully intend to grow more. Stay tuned.

A closer view:

The flowers are Zin Master Zinnias; purple foliage is Purple Prince Alternanthera; A bit of chartreuse coleus and some Asian Sword Ferns complete the vase. The crystal vase was a gift from my dearly departed brother.

I just found a few bags of seed starting potting mix on my front porch….fall zinnias should be appearing in a couple of months. And a few other things.

  1. There must have been a lot of seeds in your pack if you can cut them so often. I’m cheap and have just been throwing the spent flowers back in the bed. Our local weather starts with Florida’s hurricane. People here are stressed enough, but they feel we need to hear more. Are you getting the massive amount of rain they are talking about?

Oh, Zinnias and Ferns…you can’t go wrong! Just lovely! I love the way Zinnias just keep blooming after you cut them…throughout the growing season. 🙂

I love zinnias and they are an essential summer annual to me. My mother used to grow a couple packets of them either side our front door. That is probably where my love for them first started. 💕

I wish my zinnias were as prolific as yours, Amelia, but at least they are blooming these year. Do you pinch out your stems? Mine don’t really branch out and there is no way I would ever have enough blooms for a vase every other day! I wonder if these Master ones are available in the UK…although on balance I would prefer not to have a mix of styles. Great vase though – so summery and cheerful!

Ah, another Zinnia convert! My own seeds got off to a late start and are only just getting started but I hope they’ll catch up with the dahlias soon. I was thinking of you as I heard about Hurricane Debby – I hope all is well in your part of Florida!

They are enviable. As I likely mentioned a few times, I no longer bother much with them. However, someone did bother with some last spring, and while we were not watching, they grew quite tall and bloomed somewhat well by our standards. They were not exactly full, but they impressed us. Others noticed, but we had not gone to that area for a while to see them. When we did, it was like seeing someone else’s landscape.

They are wonderful! A really wide range of colours. It seems you have found the best way to grow them to show them at their best. Mine have always disappointed, but if I should come across those seeds I might give them another try. 😃

Well, it looks like the zinnias love your garden climate. How wonderful, and 3 feet! I’m glad to hear you weren’t hit badly by the storm.

I’m not surprised that zinnias are a new summer favourite for you Amelia. What a glorious range of vibrant and cheerful colours 😎 I’m green with envy. Here they usually end up as a summer buffet for the molluscs so I’ve stopped growing them 😢

The arrangement is very nice, I love the close-up because it emphasizes on the different forms.

    Beautiful! Inspiring!

What type of seed starting mix have you found….that doesn’t have fungus gnats or mites…for indoor seed starting?
