In a Vase on Monday – Household Roos

We have a few roos around the house. The vase this week is a Fitz and Floyd coffee cup I found irresistible in the 80s. I found it on a fantastic sale and decided it would be my cute work coffee cup. The kangaroo looks a bit demented, so this was a perfect desk accessory for a design office. I soon realized the reason it was on sale – the kangaroo hits you in the face when you drink out of the cup. It was reassigned to pencil holding duties.

The other rooing around the house is from Fiona the greyhound. Rooing is a peculiar greyhound tradition. Fiona is a dog with a schedule. Every afternoon around 4:30, we all roo (sing with the dog)

Fiona in action:

Vase details:

Blue flowers in the foreground are ‘Blue Daze’ Evolvulus; yellow spikes are Thyrallis (Galphimia glauca); pink and white spikes are Tropical Red Salvia (Salvia coccinea); blue spikes are ‘Mystic Blue’ Salvia.

Another view:

Background spikes are Sabal Palm (Palmetto sabal) seedling bits and the off white bendys are Juba Bush (Iresine diffusa), a native wildflower with a nice fragrance. One of those things that has to choose where it will live.

I’m afraid all eyes will be with your beautiful dog, then of course afterwards the arrangement. This is such a different type of arrangement with unusual flowers which I am seeing for the first time.

These flowers are so beautiful, nearly spring-like. I’ll think of you and Fiona at 4:30.

Oh what a wonderful mug, albeit impractical for drinking out of! 😁 Any idea why the greyhound rooing tradition started? I am really curious… (although not a dog person). Your vase is unusually delicate today, and more like an English afternoon tea than a Floridian ..hmm?.. Floridian something or other…! 🤣

Out of the three uses you gave it, I’d say a vase is the most winsome. The head (not for the body) could double as an Easter Rabbit, esp. with the spring-like colors you’re featuring today. 😉

Although the cheerful mix of colors – and particularly the Evolvulus – immediately caught my attention, the kangaroo mug almost simultaneously diverted it. Very cute but I did also quickly notice the fatal flaw using it to drink from. It doesn’t matter, it’s perfect to hold flowers. Fiona’s “roo” is sweet, assuming she doesn’t also do that at 4am.

  9. Your first paragraph had me creased with laughter Amelia. I can just envisage that particular scenario 🤣 I’m glad that you have been able to find an effective use for the mug which flower filled looks most lovely.

That kangaroo mug is just precious Amelia, as is your dear greyhound! We had a spaniel once that would sing to a particular theme tune on the radio and the ice cream van that used to drive around our neighbourhood!
Love the vase – the blue Evolvulus is gorgeous!

It took me a moment to see the roo, great closeup of the face. I also think the dog is really cute.

Most seem to be in agreement. The flowers are nice and all, but Fiona sort of put them in the background.

I have no idea where to begin, you have so many wonderful things in this post 😀 To keep on topic, I of course love the flowers — the two salvias pair together so well. The roo mug is so fun and cute. Then, of course, there is the canine perfection of Fiona. You knew were all bound to rooo and ahh over her, though. Such a sweet face!
