Six on Saturday – Tropical Summer

One of the wonderful things about South Florida in summer are the tropical flowers that love heat and humidity. Above is a Desert Rose (Adenium obesum). This is native to Arabia and Africa and is a rare container plant that can stay outside all summer in the full blazing sun.

The Bougainvilleas are spilling colorful flowers on arbors and trellis. This is Miss Alice Bougainvillea, the flower is the small part, the white bracts surrounding the flower are what make the show.

Another favorite, the Bridal Bouquet Frangipani (Plumeria pudica). I have these near the entries to my house, they have a light, sweet fragrance most noticable at night or early in the morning.

This is actually fruit, Sea Grapes (Coccoloba uvifera). These grow just about anywhere in South Florida, usually seen near the coast as it is very salt tolerant. The fruit ripens to brown and tastes a bit like figs, however the seed is nearly as big as the grape – for me, it is too much trouble to eat them.

Finally, this is my favorite summer flower – my neighbor grows Cattleya Orchids in her Hong Kong Orchid Tree (Bauhinia purpurea). I am trying to get some going in a palm tree, no flowers as of yet. Here is a closer view.

  1. Desert Rose is a very pretty flower, really covetable! But then so is the white bougainvillea and the frangipani. And then that orchid. Wow! Alas none of these would survive here so I shall just admire.

Well, I learned something new today! Bougainvillea can be white! Amazing to grow orchids in a tree like nature does. I wouldn’t trade dry summer heat to tropical though. Amazing flowers make it tempting!

    • I am embarking on a Bougainvillea article for a magazine. I think it comes in every color but green and blue. I will find out soon. I would like to come to your garden for the summer I am sure. It was 80 something feels like 107 by 9 am.

The desert rose is lovely. There are many lovely tropicals to grow in SFL, it must be hard to choose– one could fill a garden with orchids alone!

  5. Just gorgeous and the white of your frangipani is so pure.

  6. Tropical blooms are the only good thing in heat and humidity. Bougainvilleas are such pretty plants and those orchids are fabulous. I can grow some tropicals, but most have to be taken inside for the winter. My bougainvillea has never bloomed, but hasn’t died either.

    • Yes on flowers but the fruit is pretty good – eating Mangoes! I am surprised at how many people will keep Bougainvillea around the house. I am not good with the Orchids though I have a few. I generally forget about them til they turn brown. oops.

Beautiful photography. 😃 The desert rose is so very pretty Amy. And the close-up of the Bougainvillea was an eye-opener as I have never looked at them in detail… mostly they are sold here as small standard shrubs for summer pots so are not at eye level!

Such a tropical post, filled with things that are opposite (diagonal, actually) to what thrive here in the PNW. You must enjoy the fragrance many of those tropicals offer!

Sea grape is still . . . weird. It sort of looks like grapes. I would like to grow it, but it would not be happy here at all.
