I haven’t been sixing lately as August was a frying, hot and dry month and the garden was looking dismal. Things are looking up in September. For whatever reason, our late afternoon showers have returned, temperatures are moderating and the plants are much happier. I even went plant shopping!
One of my purchases, a Chinese Perfume Tree (Aglaia odorata). These are the flowers. I love the scent. The nursery did an excellent job of marketing, having the shrubs here and there so you wondered ‘what is that lovely fragrance’? It’s lemony and reminds me of Southern Magnolias (Magnolia grandiflora)
Here is the Chinese Perfume Tree. I planted it in a big terracotta pot as it seems they like some moisture. I am very hopeful this works and the shrub thrives. The soil in the garden is probably too well drained to sustain this plant.
New growth in the succulent containers. The Haworthias, now green, were brown through August. Grey plants are Graptosedums.
Rejuvenated Tropical Red Salvia (Salvia coccinea) This reseeds freely in the garden to the point of needing to be thinned.
‘Little Harv’ Aechmea Bromeliad in full bloom.
A little fall color and masses of purple berries on the Beautyberry (Calliocarpa americana)

Beautyberry! That is rad! That is about what mine would look like if they were more robust, with their foliage remaining until autumn. (When I saw yours in a vase without foliage, I thought that perhaps they were supposed to defoliate early.)

The yellow edge is the fall color. Fall color is better further north.

Oh, mine turned more yellow than that, but it gets a bit cooler here, and they are not so vigorous yet.

I’m happy it’s cooled off for you, we’ve had a little reprieve before it gets hot again. Your new Perfume tree is so nice in that pot, the scent sounds fabulous!

The photo of this Beauty Berry is really superb!! I googled to learn more on the plant you presented to us (Aglaia odorata): Interesting…! The flowers are not yet open on yours? It shouldn’t be long so you can enjoy the fragrance.

Great selections for your “six.” That ‘Aglaia odorata’ is lovely, and the lemony/Magnolia scent sounds very pleasant. Beautyberry is always so stunning!

That tropical red salvia is gorgeous! I’m tempted to try planting some here in hopes it self-seeds. 🙂 Love the beautyberry too.

I love every one of your sixes today. I am intrigued by your new Chinese Perfume Tree. I’d love to smell it! Don’t think I’ve ever seen a Beautyberry bush with such dense berry clusters. And what a problem to have … too many salvia seedlings 🤣!

Beautyberry Lemon cupcakes. It is like a light lemon pound cake with berry filling and drizzle. It’s good but a different sort of berry flavor.
