In a Vase on Monday – Heat Wave

We’re not having a heat wave in Florida..yet. I am sure there will be one soon. I was somewhat amused by the heat wave in the UK, the forecasted temperatures there are a nice winter day in South Florida. We are in a bit of a drought with normal spring windy weather, even the bromeliads are a bit crispy.. I have had to drag the hose around, my least favorite garden task. I let the irrigation go when all the turfgrass was asked to leave the garden. Rain is predicted a week from Sunday! UGH.

A closer view: The hot colors have all been plonked into my mother’s old jam jar. She never made jam, but liked to use the jar for flowers. I do the same thing, no jam, just flowers.

The names of the flowers sound hot. Beach Sunflower (Helianthus debilis); Firebush (Hamelia patens) in orange; Indian Blanket (Gallardia pulchella) is snuggly in red and yellow. The white daisies don’t sound so hot..Spanish Needles (Bidens alba). These produce zillions of sharp seeds – supposedly used for needles by Floridian pioneers. They are maybe 3/4 inch long, so I have never figured out quite how that works.

That’s all from South Florida. I’ll be dragging the hose around… To see more Monday vases visit Cathy at RamblingintheGarden.

You are ridiculing our heat wave, Amelia? 😀Admittedly, it’s what the news reports were saying, and I would just call it a warm spell! Your vase, however, is definitely hot stuff, and in such a pretty jar. Would it have been sold with jam in it, or was it more of a decorative jar sold to decant jam into? ps I’ll have your rain if you don’t want it…

    • I am enjoying your heat wave. It is all about perspective. 35 F would be a disaster here but 35 C is not unusual. The jar actually had not so great jam in it. My parents were diabetic so I cannot imagine who ate it! I am desperate for rain!

  2. It’s hot here, as usual, but we are getting rain showers that help. I was in the UK in the early 80’s when summers were still on the cooler side. They had a heatwave during a marathon and several people had issues from the heat. It is all what you are used to.

The British might be amused by the unusually cool weather here. Is Adam’s needle native there? It was supposedly used for sewing, because the ‘needle’ at the tip of each leaf comes off with thread-like filaments. hmmm

Jazzy combo, hope the rain resumes… Florida without humid air is downright unusual!

Your mix of oranges and yellows with a touch of white is delightful, Amelia. I smiled at Cathy’s reference to a heatwave too. We’ve yet to have a real heatwave here – we peaked out at 83F one day earlier in the month (however our interior valleys hit 90F). I emphasize with the shortage of rain, though, and hope you get a surprise splash soon. I’d written our rainy season off entirely but we got a quarter of an inch on Saturday!

Fancy jam jar! Really cheerful mix of blooms – I may manage something similar around August or September. It’s about 72F here and I’m wearing short sleeves:)

The jam jar looks like cut glass or crystal! I notice several comments have admired it too. The flowers are very cheerful and make me smile. 😃

  9. Beautiful combination of blooms! We are having a bit of the slight drought situation, too. It makes it tough when planting new plants, or taking care of established ones. I know what you mean about the heat wave in the UK. Because we get the extremes here, people don’t realize that my part of the Midwest gets very hot and humid in the summer. Of course, it’s not an extended high heat as in Florida, but I consider anything above 90F to be hot, and we certainly get some of those days in the summer. Of course, we get much colder than the UK, too, with occasional winter lows at -20F. It’s definitely a climate of extremes here. Enjoy your beautiful blooms!

Your vase looks very summery and full of cheer. We are having your heat wave (87F today), but we didn’t take your rain. None here either.

Beautiful, positively summery arrangement! I sure hope you get some rain, everyone needs a break from dragging the hose around that’s for sure!
