In a Vase on Monday – Ladies of the Front Garden

I begin to more fully appreciate the occupants of my garden near the front door as summer embraces my garden in full heat and humidity. Embraces may be too delicate a word, bringing the hammer down is more accurate. I enjoy these two ladies growing near my door in the garden and in a vase this Monday.

Miss Alice Bougainvillea in white and Lady Di Heliconias relish the heat and don’t even break a sweat being beautiful in summer. Both of the ladies have the ability to flower year round but seem to enjoy the summer most for showing off. I did not realize Miss Alice was a big bract (?) Bougainvillea until I was researching who Alice might be.

Miss Alice in full glory. Who Miss Alice is remains a mystery.

We were hoping for some rain this week in Central and South Florida after a droughty spring. If the predictions are right we will have a full season’s worth of rain this week. Seven to twelve inches is forecast. I guess I can put up the hose for a bit.

Lady Di Heliconias (Heliconia psittacorum) in red and yellow are nestled in a frond from a Sabal Palm seedling.

Miss Alice Bougainvillea bracts and true flowers with a few sprigs of charteuse coleus. The vase was inherited from my mother.

That’s all from South Florida. We will be frying, steaming or sauteing in the garden this week. To see more vases visit Cathy at ramblinginthegarden

  2. That bougainvillea is absolutely gorgeous. I hear on the news that you are going to get a lot of rain very soon.

There’s that wonder Bougainvillea again! Miss Alice looks very well-behaved in your garden photo. Maybe my husband would be more tolerant of the plant if we’d had one like that. I’ve yet to see one with white bracts here.

Awesome vase and points of view in the photos. Hope the weather is more moderate than it sounds.

So pretty! It’s nice to have plants in the garden that can take the heat. Hope they don’t mind a lot of rain, either, ‘cuz 7-12″ is a whole lot of rain! At least with sand, the flooding will be minimal. Stay cool! 😎

Bougainvillea were the first bracts that I got acquainted with, even before I bothered to notice what poinsettias are. Miss Alice certainly looks as if nothing ever happened. My pair of ‘White Stripe’ look so wimpy still.

Miss Alice looks fabulous in a vase, and I can see why you love the entrance to your house. What a welcome! That sounds like a lot of rain on its way. I suspect it really will be steamy – and I thought it was humid here! LOL!

  9. I thought Miss Alice was a Caladium at first! So large! Happy for your rain…it’s been damp but not wet here, and downright chilly (about 65 degrees yesterday) although that is set to change by Thursday. Your vase looks frosty…a perfect offset for heat and humidity eh?

  10. Those Bougainvillea bracts are massive! My sense of the scale of your vase and arrangement is all confused!!
