An idea formed in my head as I was walking my dogs yesterday morning, a coconut rolled down the street from a nearby palm and one of the dogs stopped to see what it was. Not very interesting to a dog, but I thought otherwise and picked it up. Then, I walked through my garden and spied this miniature pineapple, it has been around for so long the mother plant was producing pups and I had been thinking that it might be better for the plant to cut the pineapple.
The next thing to find was some rum. The cabinet supplied enough for one frozen cocktail. Perfect. My husband is not a fan of such girly drinks. If only I had some umbrellas.
The vase is a monogrammed highball glass from my in laws collection. A friend gave me the pineapple, the plant is red and green striped and the pineapple is inedible. But it looks great. The foliage is from a Dwarf Jamaican Heliconia and the spray of pink flowers is from Coral Vine (Antigonon leptopus). The coconut is Cocos nucifera, the Coconut Palm, very common in my neighborhood.
In my Rainforest Garden, later in the afternoon….rum, what rum?
The Pina Colada actually has some Mango granita in it. Maybe it is a Sunset Pina Colada or a Mango Colada.
LOVE IT! I’m thinking how great that would be for a party center piece.

I don’t know, some weird stuff started falling out of the coconut so I left it in the garden. People around here will paint the coconuts for Easter Eggs.

Oh Amy, I had to laugh – a coconut rolling down the street is definitely not going to happen here! 🙂 But what a fantastic prompt for your vase – I love the idea and you have described it wonderfully in your post. Thanks for sharing – and you have also reminded me that I keep meaning to go onto eBay and buy some cocktail umbrellas as there are several times I could have done with one for a vase prop! I will do it NOW 🙂

Thank you, I was already laughing as I think the dog thought it was a turtle and was disappointed. I am going to look at eBay as well, my neighbor keeps cocktail mermaids for her drinks.

Brilliant – I love the staging. And there is a happy ending. ;D

A drink in the garden is always the happy ending regardless of what is in the glass.

What an exciting walk with Coconuts falling at your feet then Pineapples popping up in your garden! Lovely to read about your floral design process and cocktail sampling too. Makes grey and windy Lancashire seem a little too pale and uninteresting today!

Watch out for those coconuts, it sounds a bit hazardous walking under palm trees. What a fun idea for an arrangement. I wish I could come and sit in your rainforest garden and drink a pina colada with you.

It is hazardous, the green coconuts are quite heavy and it can be really windy here. I wish you could join me for a drink as well, if i ever get the garden finished!

I love, love that arrangement. You should frame the photo that has the coconut beside the floral arrangement! How clever.

Thank you, Cynthia. I will be interested to see what happens to the coconut, I put it outside in my garden. Maybe it will sprout?
