It was a lovely, sunny holiday weekend punctuated by a much needed soaking rain. The garden and I are both feeling relieved and celebrating Easter Monday with an egg dyed by my neighbor and blue flowers from the garden.
The egg gets a close up:
The egg was dyed with flowers from the Blue Pea Vine (Clitoria ternata). It almost looks like a robin’s egg. The flower:
The vase contents:
The smaller bright blue flowers are Chinese Forget Me Nots (Cynoglossum amabile), grown for cutting, the stems have just gotten long enough to use. Darker blue spikes are Mystic Blue Salvia; peach spikes are Tropical Red Salvia (Salvia coccinea); white flowers at base are Miss Alice Bougainvillea.

Chartreuse flowers are Envy Zinnias, the latest batch. The white spike flowers are Sweet Almond (Aloysia virgata); ferny foliage and wild green stems are from Wild Asparagus Fern, which is probably invasive, I keep it at bay using it in flower arrangements. It is oddly sharp for a fern and difficult to pull out.
The vase is actually taupe and pottery, though it doesn’t look like that in the images. I found this at a thrift store a few years ago and have enjoyed it immensely.

Salvia coccinea is pretty cool. It looks good in that color. I am not so keen on peach or salmon or any of those colors that I can not identify, but this color looks good on that bloom. Of course, the red is nice also. Does it bloom white as well?

The Salvia flowers nearly pink, salmon, red, white and neon orange with an occasional lavendar stripe. A favorite in my garden.

I thought that I remember it it white, . . . because I thought that ‘coccinea’ was an odd name for a white flower. I had not seen it in red at that time, and still was not aware that it can be orange. Of course, it is not something that I encounter much of. I have not seen it in years, and if I remember correctly, I was not so impressed with the white bloom. You know, . . . as difficult as it is to imagine, there are some flowers that somehow look better in other colors besides white.

I have some white ones.. and they are pure white and very pretty – with Mystic Blue Salvia and Envy Zinnias…will take a picture when all are flowering. Think you would love it.

I dunno. Envy zinnias? Don’t they look like they stole Christmas? It would be interesting to see white Salvia coccinea though, just to see if they are prettier than I remember.

I love the natural movement in the vase – you have made such good use of the natural flow of the material you used. And the spherical vase is gorgeous…which reminds me I have a green glass one which was temporarily moved out of the reach of grandchildren but meant I had forgotten I had it…

The blue of that pea vine is intense! It doesn’t surprise me that it was effective as a dye. I love the color mix in your arrangement – the blue and peach flowers are well married. I adore the forget-me-nots. Cynoglossum hasn’t done well for me here but this year I’m trying Anchusa azurea in my ongoing effort to get some forget-me-nots of my own.

I love the blue of the Cynoglossum, and the peach Salvia offers a nice contrast. The use of small flowers in the round vase gives it a cottage-garden feel to it. A change from your usual Fuji ‘spa’ look. 🙂
btw, the salvia have started germinating, yay!
