June is Gay Pride month in the US. A friend who owns a local business is flying a Rainbow flag in support of Gay Pride and tolerance. She is experiencing push back from employees and customers. Meanwhile, nearby flags supporting our current President have been burned.
She said, “We need more flowers”.
This made me wonder if I could find all the colors of the Rainbow in my garden. I found all the colors, easily and in the rain. Champagne flutes were used to celebrate what tolerance we have and the blue bottle represents sadness for many who don’t.
The Violet vase is Purple Queen (Setcresea “Purple Queen”), the Indigo vase is Blue Porterweed (Stachytarpeta jamaicensis), the Blue vase is Plumbago (Plumbago auriculata).
The myriad shades of green never fail to amaze me. The Green vase has (I think) a leaf from ‘Solar Sunrise’ Coleus (grown in shade), Boston Fern (Nephrolepis exaltata), and Pencil Cactus (Euphorbia tirucalli “Firesticks”).
The Yellow vase is Black Eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta), the Orange vase is Mexican Honeysuckle (Justicia spicigera), and the Red vase is The President Hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis).
While putting the vases together, I was looking at all the flowers. So different, yet so alike.
Lesson learned.

I love this! Just last week I was thinking about buying a ‘rainbow’ of bearded iris to plant out in the fall for next spring. I think it would look beautiful.

What a glorious rainbow of flowers. We had the most amazing double rainbow here the other day – just in time for Pride Brighton next weekend.

Pushback? Nowadays? I would not put a flag outside my business, but it seems odd – or primitive – to have a problem with others doing so.
Now, I know you have some very pretty flowers there, but my favorite is the common black-eyed-Susan. I just like that one. It looks so simple and wholesome, like something that Laura Ingalls would grow in here garden.

I agree,primitive – but California is most likely more progressive.I love the Black eyed Susan and have been trying to grow them for years. Fingers crossed they reseed, I think I am a little too far south.

Well, California is too crazily progressive. A friend of mine who happens to be lesbian and knows a few transgender people locally tells me that the transgender society is appalled by how society is making a mockery of them by catering to them too much. Those who believe that they are women have no problem with using a ladies’ room. Those who believe that they are men have no problem using a men’s room. Realistically, the rest of us have no problem with it either, and are just fine not knowing what sort of parts the guy using the stall instead of the urinal is equipped with. (I know I don’t want to know.) What is crazy is that there are those who demand restrooms for the trangender crowd, which means even a small Starbuck’s would have four restrooms and a fifth for those who can not decide! Trangender people are so rare that three of those five restrooms would get almost no use. Besides, it is just more segregation for a segment of the Community that has tried to desegregate. Anyway, I don’t mean to rant about that. It is irrelevant to your flowers.

A lovely rainbow of flowers and a lovely idea. We were in Brighton a few years ago and found ourselves in the middle of a Gay Pride parade, it was such a joyous occasion.

What a lovely post – your rainbow is very fitting for the occasion and I like the choices of flower too. Such a shame the flower power peace movement of the sixties is no longer alive. 🙂
