Today is the second official day of Fall. Looking over my coffee cup this morning, I noted the temperature was already in the 80s (25 C) with 97% humidity. My garden is calling me to get back in the groove and clean things up for South Florida’s winter gardening season. I am desperately seeking the season and was inspired to create a Autumnal vase.
The vase is a silver plate goblet collected by my mother on one of her many ‘junk store’ adventures. It doesn’t hold water, so it requires a recycled yogurt container tucked inside when used as a vase. I don’t think I would use it for beverages.
My pseudo Fall flowers include: Gallardias (Gallardia pulchella) in red and gold; fruit is Surinam Cherries (Eugenia uniflora); the sprays of berries are from the non native Firebush (Hamelia patens); red “fall” leaf from Raggedy Ann Copperleaf (Acalypha wilkesiana); grey background foliage is Texas Sage (Leucophyllum frutescens) and the cream colored spikes are from Wireweed.

The Shrub Queen 
You were able to find some good Fall colors. We are having Fall here, as the temperatures are below 90 and the humidity below 100%. It was so “cool” that we were able to eat outside surrounded by citronella candles.

Glad you said the vase was a goblet as it looks much, much larger. Definitely says autumn is here. I also told Cathy that her display made me think I should add Caryopteris. What a blue! “Susan” is one of my all time favorite movies.

Love the container, a very elegant dribble glass. You’ve found autumnal colors even in the heat of Florida and the goblet and contents are perfect together. Happy autumn and I hope you’re able to get back into the groove soon!

Good Morning Amy. We may be getting a small taste of fall here in Atlanta this week. It has been in the middle to high nineties for the last 3 weeks. At this point fall is only a scurrilous rumor. Love the colors in the vase this week.

I laughed outright at the title of your post. Still, I think you did a great job simulating what’s considered fall elsewhere. Seasons are a different thing in our climates, aren’t they? Here, we usually say we have a warm (now commonly hot!) season and a cool season. We used to be able to say we had a rainy season too but I’m not sure we can make that claim any more.

Again, there are many that I do not recognize. (Hey, didn’t I just say that about someone else’s vase?) Leucophyllum? I must look that one up. It sounds familiar.

Hey, that is the barometer bush! I mean, the Leucophyllum. I saw it in a nursery near where I went to school. It is not native of course, but looks like it should be. I have not grown it yet.

Oh, when you called it a Barometer Bush, I looked it up – I guess it is so humid here it doesn’t really work as a Barometer. Just sort of flowers a little sporadically. The shrub itself is fine and it is difficult to find grey foliage here.

Oh, I would not have though of that. Many of the best plants with gray foliage are gray because they are from desert regions. They prefer aridity, so might not like the humidity there.

Fall in Florida…not really any significant change until around halloween. While we don’t get much change weather wise, your arrangement definitely looks like fall.

There are three Red Maples that change color in the Savannas and the seed pods on Goldenrain trees. Um..Blanchetiana Bromeliad and Torch Bromeliads, Spider Lilies, Beautyberries…my Floridian harbingers of Fall.
