In A Vase on Monday – Purple Haze

20171105_101041-1

Purple Haze, all in my brain.

Is it the Muhly Grass, or just the change in time?

I am not at all sure if Daylight Saving Time is peculiar to the US, but I have a strong sense it happens elsewhere. We turned our clocks back one hour on Saturday night. This seemingly tiny adjustment always throws me off a bit.

I have been enjoying my hazy pinky purple Muhly Grass and bought a Mexican Sage last week to add to the purpleness of my perennial border. Naturally, I thought of Jimi Hendrix.

Hence the guitar.

Here are the correct lyrics:

Purple Haze

By Jimi Hendrix

Purple haze, all in my brain
Lately things they don’t seem the same
Actin’ funny, but I don’t know why
Excuse me while I kiss the sky
Purple haze, all around
Don’t know if I’m comin’ up or down
Am I happy or in misery?
What ever it is, that girl put a spell on me
Help me
Help me
Oh, no, no
Ooo, ahhh
Ooo, ahhh
Ooo, ahhh
Ooo, ahhh,

The components of the vase include:
In purple spikes, Mexican Sage (a Salvia of some sort)
Grey foliage, Texas Sage (Luecophyllum)
Purple Ornamental Peppers
In Chartreuse, Alabama Coleus
The Purple Haze, Muhly Grass (Muhlebergia capillaris)
Grey Ferny Foliage, Copper Fennel
White spikes, not a clue.
Excuse me while I kiss the sky.

  1. Years ago when I started a flower border along my driveway I planted purple barberries, a Forest Pansy rebud and a purple smokebush. I was going to make it my Hendrix border because, as you say, it would be a purple haze. Somewhere along the way so much yellow was added that Jimi is no where in sight these days. I love how your arrangement is almost moving with that grass.

Ooh ah indeed, what a fabulous arrangement. A symphony in purple, even down to the shiny, purple peppers. I love it.
We change the clocks too and have dark afternoons as a result. I hate it. It possibly means lighter early mornings but I wouldn’t know anything about that.

Yes, we changed our clocks a week ago but unlike Chloris I adjust pretty easily and just carry on as normal, but I know not everyone can. I love how your vase has come together – it looks quite simple but underneath it has been well thought out and the link with the song is perfect. Those ornamental peppers are gorgeous!

A Hendrix fan? Do tell! 😉
I love this arrangement– Purple and chartreuse are a favorite combo of mine and this one really pleases. Airy grass, contrasting sages and purple peppers with the coleus – truly inspired!

You couldn’t have picked a better vase for the arrangement, Amelia. It complements the colors of your foliage and flowers perfectly. How big is that guitar?

I’m not fond of daylights savings time either but, between “spring forward” and “fall back,” I always prefer the latter. It makes me feel virtuous when I’m getting up “early.”

I see what you mean by the haze! The time change here was two weeks ago and I needed a whole week to adjust, then yesterday I realized our main clock had not been put back… no wonder I was feeling confused! I am glad you focussed in on the Coleus and purple peppers, as I nearly missed them. I love the fresh green of the Coleus leaves as a contrast. 🙂

Chartreuse as the little black dress of the garden! Lovely … what a very delicious vase – the ornamental peppers are the crowning glory. But you’ve left me thinking also about song-themed borders!
