No one is singing the blues at my house today. It is a blessedly cool, overcast day in South Florida, the temperatures hovering around 80 degrees (F). Thunder can be heard from about 25 miles away in the Atlantic and the colors in the sky inspired my arrangement. In this climate these flowers and berries announce the coming of Fall. In purple. Seems a bit weird to think of Orchids as a fall flower. I do have some native Goldenrod in bud right now and that seems more normal to me as does the Beautyberry in the vase.
The weather today is not a tropical storm, just leftover moisture from one or some weather thing I failed to fully grasp. I have learned the Hurricane season is difficult to predict as are the storms. Named storm Harvey is meandering around in the Caribbean and there are two disturbances hanging around the tropical Atlantic that probably won’t do anything. Or not. Last year Hurricane Matthew brushed the coast near me (first week of October) and that was quite enough. Forever.
The Blue Violin holding the flowers belonged to my grandmother. She kept colored bottles in her windows as long as I can remember.
The flowers in the vase are: in purple Spathoglottis ‘Cabernet’ Orchids, the berries are Beautyberries (Calliocarpa americana) For foliage we have a bit of Asparagus Fern and the leaves from a Martin Bromeliad. The Bromeliad is such a weird cross I don’t have a clue what the latin name is. Bromeliad ‘Martin’ that works.
No gardening for me today. Happy Monday.

Nice! Ive always been confused with Beautyberries. I read they are edible, but I never see the birds or animals eating them, and my husband seems to think they are poisonous. Needless to say, Ive never tried them.

They make jam out of them around here. I haven’t had any, the taste is described as astringent.

It’s windy here today too, but nothing strong or serious. Enjoy the cooler day. The berries in your vase certainly make it feel more autumnal and summery, but you’ll have flowers when the rest of us are scrabbling to find any.

A very pretty little arrangement. I saw some weather graphics with a lot of potential lines heading to Florida. Hopefully, they will head out to sea.

Guess there’ll be no eclipse viewing for you today. It is so hyped, I’ll be glad when it is over, very Scroogey of me, I know. 😉
I love that blue violin vase, so pretty. How nice it must be to have orchids growing in the garden. I have two that must be coddled in the sunspace. While I can grow beautyberry, it dies to the ground every winter, therefore never is as robust as the one you show here. More like an ailing cousin in a Victorian novel – lol!

I love stormy weather as long as it’s not destructive, although I guess this eliminates any eclipse viewing opportunities in your area. (We were clouded over a bit here and we’re well outside the area of totality so we didn’t get much of a show either.) Your orchids are scrumptious, as are the berries.

I actually recognized the beautyberries this week – they look very much at home in your unusual vase with the pretty orchid. Autumn is coming here too – the sedum are turning pink!

An import! I have been underwhelmed by them in our climate as they die right back in winter and take ages to get to any decent size.

I love the way weather can affect one’s mood..I love looking at the sky, at clouds, and even raindrops down the windows. Love you vase handed down through the family, and how they have brought berry and orchid together.
