This crystal vase was given to me by my late brother many years ago for Christmas. I know he would like it that I am using it for arranging flowers, especially during the holidays.
This is simply an arrangement of Heliconia psitticorum with its foliage and a couple of Boston Fern fronds for texture. Parrot Flowers they are called in many places. They actually do remind me of Parrots, kind of.
I attended design school about thirty years ago, Ouch! And one of my teachers favorite saying was “use the KISS concept”. This did not involve the Rock n Roll band or any crazy makeup.
It was Keep It Simple Stupid. I can relate on some levels but simple has limitations in gardening. Deep thoughts, I need to work on my Christmas tree:
Here is my retired racing Greyhound Alan helping and wishing everyone Happy Holidays!
A fabulous and special vase in container and plant material….simple and elegant!

Alan’s got the right outlook on holiday decorating – chill out and enjoy it! I love your vase this week and you’re right – I know my own vases usually look best when I don’t overdo (not that I always adhere to that admonition). It makes me think of the guidance I’ve heard about dressing for a party – get gussied up but, before you leave, remove at least one item.

As chilled as Alan looks, his favorite thing to do is dig a giant hole in the back yard while running around in circles and jumping in the hole. Big dog fun.
While I love simplicity – I also love exuberant over the top arrangements. I also like the remove one item concept, that is a new one to me.

The special vase you used today is lovely. The Heliconia psittacorum is so interesting it can really stand on its own.

My mind was boggling when I read your title – doh! KISS, of course! Simple and effective – and a gentle reminder to us of how effective simplicity often is. Thanks for sharing

Love those tropicals! Great photo of your dog. I guess he leaves the tree alone.

This particular greyhound and his friend Charles have no issues with the tree. We went through several years with tabletop trees because our male dogs just could not cope with a tree in their house.

You are right. Sometimes simplicity is the best way and those parrot flowers look great in your vase. Nice to meet Alan – enjoying his retirement by the looks of things! 😉
